Gay of Thrones

Role: Designer & Animator
Brief
Gay Of Thrones is an Emmy™️ nominated recap show for HBO’s Game of Thrones produced by Funny Or Die. The digital series has been running for 6+ seasons and was in need of an update. What first became a task to clean up the original intro, turned into a complete rebrand with a design that fully captures the personality of host Jonathan Van Ness and his charisma.
Process
The original intro was simply compositing the show’s name into the actual show’s title sequence. We looked into ways to borrow styles from HBO’s previous ad campaigns and combine them with LGBT themes. What we landed upon was making elements of hair dressery to be mystical glittering tools that eventually collaged together to become the backdrop to the shows logo title. Glitter and vibrant colors juxtaposed with the HBO show’s serious dark tone to help fully realize world of Gay Of Thrones.

Outcome
This project relied heavily on 3D. I don’t consider myself a modeler, so acquiring assets (mostly free ones) and modifying them to fit the vision was a process I learned a lot from. Prepping models, understanding normals, and lighting up the scene, which was inspired from Apple product reveals, all resulted in a project that I felt very passionate to work on and walked away with understanding a lot more.
